The level of fraud and fleecing of taxpayers is staggering
I think one real challenge is finding a way to present this to progressives in a way such that they will care. Even a reasonable message delivered by "rich folks" or "right-wing" are simply DOA.
First of all, why does the city need so many "non-profits"? Why exactly were they established - patronage or real need? Who approves them and their budget? What is that process?
City bureaucracy has ballooned over the decades, yet the population hasn't changed much in decades. A per person annual burden should be published comparing the growth of this monster over the last few decades can be seen for what it is. If you really want to be shocked, compare the number of bureaucrats, commissions and non-profits per taxpayer that existed in the 1960's to what it is now. The increase is mind boggling. "San Francisco employs over 34,000 city workers for a population of roughly 840,000. This translates to about 1 city bureaucrat for every 24 residents, giving the city the highest core government employee-to-resident ratio of any large U.S." And yet we seem to need more non-profits to do the work.
